Camp Off The Ground With A Truck Tent

An innovative alternative to tent camping is the truck tent. Numerous companies design and manufacture the tents that are available for specific truck model or based upon the size of the truck bed. Dome or tunnel versions turn the back of pick-up trucks into off the ground camping environments. Some models bolt to the truck bed while others are free standing.

The dome or tunnel tents are equipped with color-coded fiberglass poles, tie-downs and taped seam rain flys. They vary in shape, color and size but will cover the entire truck bed including the tailgate and some include rainflys with awnings. They are constructed much the same way as typical tents using polyester taffeta and nylon floors with privacy mesh windows. There are tents on the market made of cotton duck canvas that assemble over aluminum frames. Many of the tents have 5 feet of headroom, large D-shaped doors and are polyurethane coated.

US Truck Tents manufactures a model that bolts to the frame of the truck and remains in place as occupants drive down the road. A durable canvas fabric covers a heavy duty aluminum frame and the tent is equipped with a removable floor. The side and rear panels contain a minimum of 7 windows with 4 having zippered openings. The tent also contains ground ties so the tent can be removed from the truck bed and placed onto the ground. When assembled on a truck bed the tent measures 7’3” wide and 74” tall.

An inflatable tent is available that comes equipped with a DC powered air pump and air mattress. The tunnel shaped tent inflates in less than 10 minutes and has a canopy that completely covers the tent. The rear door is comprised of mosquito netting and is zippered. A front door provides access to the truck cab.

A removable truck topper or cap constructed of durable colorfast fabric and aluminum frame, protects cargo or equipment from the elements or provides a quick sleeping area. Initial installation is under an hour and then is easily removed or reassembled by one person. The rear and side panels can be rolled up and fastened when needed.

For pickups with camper tops, camper top tents make use of the space available when the tailgate is opened. Shock cord ensures the tent is snug around the outside of the vehicle and has a large zippered rear opening. A larger 10'x10' version is free standing or attaches to the back of a truck with a topper, providing immediate access to the back of the vehicle for extra sleeping or storage space.
